Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position from which to force an attacker to submit. It is a self defense system that was created by the Gracie family to enable a smaller, weaker person to use leverage and proper technique to defend themselves against a bigger and stronger assailant. At Creighton mixed martial arts academy, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu techniques that are taught come straight from the legendary Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City. The Gracie family brought their style of BJJ to America to prove its effectiveness against other martial arts disciplines. The outcome was amazing as it shocked the world on how efficient BJJ was against all other martial art styles.
Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is made up of three different levels of experience that include an introduction, beginner, and intermediate/advanced program. Having these different levels of training is crucial in learning the basics from day one and building off of this foundation one step at a time. So whether you are looking for a realistic self defense system to train in, physical conditioning, personal development, or to compete at a local, state, national or international level, our program is for you. What makes BJJ different from other martial arts?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts in that it provides solutions for all possible stages of combat. Other disciplines like Tang So Do or Karate focus on striking and rely on a person's strength and speed to deliver damage, but speed and strength doesn't matter when you're training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts fundamentally. While other martial arts rely heavily on strength and speed, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on superior technique and leverage to control your opponent and apply submissions.
How long does it typically take to earn a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Typically, it takes anywhere from 8 to 12 years to attain the rank of Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Each belt (with the exception of Blue) takes about 2-4 years of dedicated practice; Blue Belt can often be attained in about a year of dedicated study.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training safe?
At Creighton Mixed Martial Arts Academy safety is paramount. Accidents can happen, as in any other sport, but we pay close attention to safety and take extra precautions so that training is not only realistic but safe and enjoyable.
Who can learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Practically anyone can utilize the techniques created by Carlos Gracie. Carlos Gracie, when he created his revolutionary system, weighed no more than 135 lbs. The core principle of Gracie Jiu-jitsu is to provide a method for smaller, weaker individuals to protect themselves from bigger, stronger attackers.
Is BJJ a good exercise?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts can provide you with far more extensive results than typical aerobic exercise. The resistance encountered while training in BJJ and MMA provides you with a good base to improve your core strength through intense abdominal work, increases your muscle tone, and reduces body fat while improving your balance, bodily coordination, cardiovascular capacity, and muscular endurance.
