Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that emphasizes ground fighting, aiming to gain a dominant position to force an opponent to submit. Originating from the Gracie family, BJJ enables smaller individuals to defend themselves against larger assailants using leverage and technique. At Creighton Mixed Martial Arts Academy, our BJJ techniques are directly from the renowned Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City, known for proving BJJ's effectiveness across various martial arts disciplines.
Our BJJ program at Creighton MMA consists of three levels: introduction, beginner, and intermediate/advanced, allowing students to learn progressively and build a solid foundation. Whether you seek self-defense skills, physical fitness, personal growth, or competitive opportunities, our program caters to diverse goals. Whether you live in Suwanee, Buford, Sugar Hill, Cumming, Duluth, or Lawrenceville areas, we welcome you to experience our academy and join our BJJ community. We look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your martial arts and fitness goals.

What makes BJJ different from other martial arts?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts in that it provides solutions for all possible stages of combat. Other disciplines like Tang So Do or Karate focus on striking and rely on a person's strength and speed to deliver damage, but speed and strength doesn't matter when you're training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts fundamentally. While other martial arts rely heavily on strength and speed, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on superior technique and leverage to control your opponent and apply submissions.
-
How long does it typically take to earn a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Typically, it takes anywhere from 8 to 12 years to attain the rank of Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Each belt (with the exception of Blue) takes about 2-4 years of dedicated practice; Blue Belt can often be attained in about a year of dedicated study.
-
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training safe?
At Creighton Mixed Martial Arts Academy safety is paramount. Accidents can happen, as in any other sport, but we pay close attention to safety and take extra precautions so that training is not only realistic but safe and enjoyable.
-
Who can learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Practically anyone can utilize the techniques created by Carlos Gracie. Carlos Gracie, when he created his revolutionary system, weighed no more than 135 lbs. The core principle of Gracie Jiu-jitsu is to provide a method for smaller, weaker individuals to protect themselves from bigger, stronger attackers.
-
Is BJJ a good exercise?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts can provide you with far more extensive results than typical aerobic exercise. The resistance encountered while training in BJJ and MMA provides you with a good base to improve your core strength through intense abdominal work, increases your muscle tone, and reduces body fat while improving your balance, bodily coordination, cardiovascular capacity, and muscular endurance.
